Paulette Mentor was born in the middle of the last century to a family of sharecroppers in rural Alabama. She took her surname from Louis Mentor, a Seattle area lumberman and local politician, whom she married in 1985.
Little else is known about her early years before she began painting professionally in the mid 1990's. It has often been suggested that Mentor had an early affinity for the work of William deKooning, Jim Dine, and Jackson Pollock.
